Compulsory strand of MBChB programme – runs over year 1-5. For students entering via alternative routes, evidence of satisfactory teaching and academic attainment is mandatory

Module summary

IDEALS groups meet regularly so that you can form the kinds of relationships that support this type of learning and development.The course consists of:• Lectures by University experts and specially invited external experts• Compulsory small group work• Project work in teams, including presentations• Online resources to inform small group discussions facilitated by a Tutor• Self-directed, task-based study time• In-course assessments demonstrating professional attitudes, attributes and behaviours recorded on the Clinical Skills Passport• Assessment requirements include meeting attendance requirements, engagement with in-course materials and small group work, submission of Clinical Skills passport entries and effective contribution to small group discussions.This course is a unique opportunity for you to develop a range of skills, such as emotional intelligence and self-awareness, how to look after wellbeing, reflective practice, learning and teaching, teamwork and presentation skills, which will enable your ongoing personal and professional development and lifelong learning. The Year 1 course is based on ‘Achieving Good Medical Practice’ which outlines the standards and behaviours expected of medical students.The IDEALS curriculum maps to ‘Outcomes for Graduates’ to ensure you meet the requirements for graduation required by the GMC.

Objectives

Year 1-3
The aim of this unique course is to support personal and professional development from medical student to professional, whilst exploring what this looks like for you as an individual.
This course enables students to develop skills, attitudes and behaviours that underpin the GMC requirements of being a good doctor according to ‘Good Medical Practice’ https://www.gmc-uk.org/ethical-guidance/ethical-guidance-for-doctors/good-medical-practice

The Year 1 course is based on ‘Achieving Good Medical Practice’ which outlines the standards and behaviours expected of medical students.
The IDEALS curriculum maps to ‘Outcomes for Graduates’ to ensure you meet the requirements for graduation required by the GMC:

GMC Outcomes for Graduates Domain 1: Professional Values and Behaviours
Identify and practise the values and behaviours underpinning professionalism as a medical student outlined in Achieving Good Medical Practice
Display respect for colleagues, peers and patients
Understand there are different leadership styles and recognise what good leadership looks like
Reflect on your current leadership skills and next steps required for development
Understand and demonstrate effective teamworking skills across small tutor group and interprofessional settings
GMC Outcomes for Graduates Domain 2: Professional Skills
Demonstrate emotional intelligence and self-awareness, and work towards developing broader perspective thinking
Develop reflective practice skills as a tool for learning, and appreciate its importance as part of continuing professional development for students and doctors
Appreciate different methods that can be used to engage learners and practice your peer teaching skills
Know how to give and receive useful feedback, and respond to this constructively for personal development
GMC Outcomes for Graduates Domain 3: Professional Knowledge
Appreciate the similarities and differences between healthcare services across the 4 countries of the UK
Recognise the impact of bias in a healthcare setting and reflect upon how to mitigate against this
Understand the importance of speaking up when something is wrong and demonstrate active bystander techniques


Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:

• Identify and practise the values and behaviours underpinning professionalism as a medical student outlined in ‘Achieving Good Medical Practice’
• Understand the importance of looking after their own wellbeing
• Develop healthy ways to cope with stress and challenges
• Display respect for colleagues and peers
• Demonstrate emotional intelligence and self-awareness
• Demonstrate effective teamworking skills
• Know how to deliver and receive feedback and respond to this constructively
• Identify and practise the values and behaviours underpinning professionalism in medicine
• Engage with personal and professional development
• Understand bias and reflect upon how to mitigate against this
• Demonstrate active bystander techniques

Skills outcomes
In conjunction with the objectives and outline syllabus above, subject specific skills as applied to the MBChB programme:
- Reflective and self-awareness skills.
- Team-working
- Self regulation of own learning, including identification and modification of approach to learning.
- Co-mentoring skills, including personal and professional development.
- How to give and receive feedback on academic and professional performance.

The IDEALS strand integrates the following themes:

Private study

Student will be expected to be developing as reflective practitioners on clinical placement which requires consolidation of learning in IDEALS 1 & 2

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Assessment will be through student participation in teaching sessions and in placement which demonstrates application of key IDEALS principles including Professionalism. These principles will underpin the Year 3 case presentations although the latter will be formally assessed in Campus to Clinic 3 (CtoC)
