Module summary

Each student will conduct an individual, original laboratory or analytical project in a research setting. Students will each develop an experimental plan, gain experience of a variety of methodologies throughout the course of their project, and report findings in several formats.

Objectives

• Describe and critically evaluate the most recent research in the area of their project in order to identify important research questions;
• To conduct an individual laboratory or analytical project in Molecular Medicine and/or Cancer Biology and Therapy in a strong research active environment;
• To implement an approved experimental plan whilst working as part of a research group;
• Explain the methodology that are applied in the project and critically appraise how these principles apply to the research question;
• Assess and critically appraise the validity, strengths and weaknesses of their own work;
• To be able to report scientific findings both verbally and in writing.

Learning outcomes
1. Implement a study protocol to address a specific Molecular Medicine or Cancer Biology and Therapy research question;
2. Work safely and in a professional manner in a research laboratory or other relevant research environment;
3. Demonstrate sound familiarity with specific experimental techniques applicable to Molecular Medicine and/or Cancer Biology and Therapy;
4. Identify and critically appraise potential sources of experimental and measurement error and develop strategies to minimise such error;
5. Collect and store scientific data securely and ethically;
6. Evaluate and apply appropriate statistical tests in the analysis of research data;
7. Critically interpret their own research data;
8. Write scientifically placing novel research in a broader context;
9. Evaluate and present their research both verbally and in writing to different audiences.

Skills outcomes
Laboratory and analytical skills appropriate to the study of Molecular Medicine and/or Cancer Biology and Therapy.
Preparation, planning and execution of a medically related research project.

Subject / discipline practical laboratory or research analysis skills.

Critical analysis of own and others work.

Communication of proposals, outcomes and analysis in written and oral format to different audiences.

Syllabus

Students will conduct an original, independent research project after approval of a project proposal developed with a named supervisor.

Private study

One lecture at the start of module and one lecture in the final stages of module are centred on approaching the practical aspects and module assessments. They are designed to link with the module 'Preparing for the Research Project'.
The time allocated to tutorials is to provide one to one discussion between the student and supervisor on a regular basis. It will be monitored through completion of a reflective log with input from both student and supervisor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback is provided on project progression by individual supervisors and a reflective log of 10 such 'tutorial' meetings recorded.
Formative feedback on the draft research project report will be provided by supervisor 2 weeks before submission date.
