Module summary

The programme culminates in your research project supervised by leading researchers in their field. In collaboration with the teaching team, you will choose, design, conduct and write your research project, tailored to your chosen specialism as closely as possible. You can design a project yourself with the assistance of an academic supervisor, or else choose from a range designed by the supervisors. The final outcome will be to write up a research article suitable for journal publication. We will encourage you to submit the article to a scientific journal.

Objectives

Students taking a research project will learn the skills and acquire the knowledge necessary to conduct practical research in the area of medical imaging.

Students will work with one or more supervisors, which will allow them to experience research within the field of Medical Imaging. The students will record their research steps, present their project in the form of a Journal style article and will deliver an oral presentation.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Present the findings of their research using common academic methods of dissemination.
2. Explain the scientific method that is applied in the project
3. Demonstrate how this method could provide a reproducible answer to this research question.
4. Critically evaluate recent research in the discipline in order to identify important research questions.
5. Formulate research ideas, hypotheses and questions.
6. Develop, implement, execute plans by which to evaluate the research questions within a realistically set timeline.
7. Assess and appraise the validity, strengths and weaknesses of his or her own work.
8. Suggest future research directions.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to explore a subject relating to medical imaging of their choice. They will critically appraise the current literature and devise a research aim. Students will then design and execute a research plan, analysing their findings appropriately and keeping an appropriate research notebook. The module requires students to communicate their research as a journal style article and conference style presentation, developing skills for the students’ future careers.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

By weekly individual supervision meetings with experienced members of staff during the practical aspect. A brief summary of the feedback and agreed actions will be recorded within the “Research Notebook” of the student.

The supervisor and the student are asked to complete independently a proforma of the student progress by submitting a corresponding form about 5 weeks after the project has commenced. If needed the module lead will follow up progress further.
