Syllabus

Corpus linguistics is aimed at the empirical study of how language is used. The basis for the study is provided by corpora, ie large databanks of texts in natural language.

This module explores basic methods in corpus linguistics and aims to equip you with the ability to develop and use monolingual and multilingual corpora in learning foreign languages and doing translations.

To do this, you need a compbination of conceptual knowledge and practical experience providing answers to the following questions:

- What are differences betwen intuition-based and empirial approaches to linguistics?
- What is a corpus and which corpora are available?
- How can we classify texts stored in a corpus and evaluate its representativeness?
- Can you use the Internet as a corpus?
- How to develop your own corpus?
- What are the mechanisms for querying a corpus?
- What are the statistical methods for studying word uses in a corpus?
- How can you use parallel and comparable corpora to find translation equivalents?
- What information can be found in bilingual dictionaries and in corpora?
- How can you build your own glossaries and usage-based dictionaries?
