Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of sexual reproductive health, including recent historical developments;
- demonstrate knowledge of the health status of children including under-nutrition and the determinants around the world
- critically analyse links between sexual and reproductive health and social, cultural, political and economic factors in low income countries;
- discuss the role and objectives of linear and comprehensive health service interventions addressing the health of mothers, infants and children.

Syllabus

The maternal, reproductive and child health module will introduce medical undergraduates to contemporary issues surrounding reproductive health; determines of fertility; socio-cultural context of sexual health and differences in practice; theories of population change and their impact on global health, population and development policies; the extent and causes of maternal morbidity and mortality; objectives and impact of both linear and comprehensive health services interventions addressing reproductive health, sexual health, safe motherhood, abortion, maternal health, child health and under-nutrition; health status of children in regions around the globe; the use of infant & child health indicators in the assessment of the health populations globally, nationally, regionally and at grassroots level; principles underpinning the Rights of the Child, its agenda, goals and strategies for achieving these goals; the role of international agencies in child health.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students need to do preparatory reading for the seminars and some lectures. Students receive some feedback on their learning from this reading from the lecturer and peers during group discussion.
To help prepare for the essay assignment, students are divided randomly into small groups (4-5 per group) and asked to prepare a short group presentation. Learning resources on effective group work and oral presentations also are made available. Group presentations are made to the larger student group during a seminar. All groups receive feedback from the lecturer on the content, structure and effectiveness and on their presentations.
The Module Leader also holds a question and answer session on the essay assignment.
