Pre-requisite qualifications

Two years of satisfactory completion of medical undergraduate course and selection for entry by Module Leader or representative.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- discuss the past, present and predicted future international pattern of non-communicable diseases
- critically discuss and analyse the reasons put forward for the recent emergence of non-communicable diseases in low income countries and their underlying risk factors
- be able to propose measures to monitor, prevent and treat these disorders.

Skills outcomes
Applying solutions in middle- and low-income countries context.


Syllabus

The description of the 'epidemiological transition' including early recognition of differences in the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases in developed and developing countries and theories for the reasons for these changes.

The underlying risk factors for these disease (nutrition, physical activity and tobacco). Policy measures which can be taken to prevent these trends and to deal with the consequences.

Examples of conditions to be covered are: 'syndrome X', gastro-intestinal disorders (constipation, appendicitis, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome), the major cancers (lung, breast, bowel), psychiatric and related disorders (depression, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse), physical trauma and disability (traffic accidents, results of war), dental health.
