Module summary

This module will introduce students to the theories that are used to undertake critical analysis of case studies from all areas of the international fashion value chain, from fibre development, cloth making, garment design and manufacture and retail (bricks and mortar and digital platforms). The value chain within the fashion industry provides the focal start point for this module. The study of contextual situations across the value chain will be presented, analysed and discussed. Current research cases taking place within the School of Design and partner organisations will form a demonstrable example of research applied to teaching.

Objectives

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the development of in-depth critical knowledge of the fashion value chain using theories and critical framework techniques relevant to the fashion value chain.
2. Apply Design Management theories to critically evaluate the potential of fashion brands and business activities to avoid delivering negative social and environmental impacts. Evaluation the potential of fashion brands and business activities to avoid delivering negative social and environmental impact through creative solution development.
3. Demonstrate an ability to undertake independent case study analysis and critical evaluation of value chain within the fashion industry

Skills outcomes
1. Demonstrate critical knowledge of the fashion value chain using theories and critical framework techniques relevant to the fashion value chain
2. Develop a critical awareness of the implications of the value chain within fashion organisations, consumers, and society at an international level.
3. Demonstrate ability to research independent areas of interest in relation to the development of innovations within the contemporary fashion value chain
4. Demonstrate independent research skills to critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of case studies within the fashion value chain
5. Develop of a case study that demonstrates strategic awareness and analysis

Indicative Content for this module includes:

- The fashion value chain will be explored from fibre to finished garment and marketing
- The application of theories and critical frameworks and their application to the fashion value chain
- The role of design management in critical evaluation of fashion business
- The critical assessment and evaluation of the potential of fashion brands and business activities to avoid delivering negative social and environmental impact through creative solution development.

Private study

Considering this is a distance learning module independent and private study activity are also to be considered in the lecture and seminar hours count.

Independent Learning - refers to non-facilitated directed learning. Students will work through bespoke interactive learning resources and reflective activities in the VLE.

Range of readings, tasks, formative MCQ test and discussion board online (e.g. search strategies and online Q&A)

Private Study - refers to directed reading and self-directed research in support of learning activities and discussions, as well as in preparation for assessments.

1. Understanding, critically analyse, and comparing main theories - 20hours
2. Identifying further studies and newest research trends on the topic – 18 hours
3. Case studies analysis and review – 24 hours
4. Development of a critical review of main theories and other sources - 26 hours
5. Preparation of portfolio - 38 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- The module's digital learning materials provide regular opportunities for participants to check their understanding and gain feedback (e.g., case studies with short answer questions and automated feedback, MCQs with detailed feedback on correct/incorrect answers).
- The individual unit webinars and discussion forums provide opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.
- The module assessment will enable student progress to be monitored with formative feedback provided for draft of the portfolio (case study analysis) – mid-semester.
