Module summary

The module provides students with knowledge of: the purpose and nature of work experience in a ug degree programme; experiential learning and self -reflection; creative work and the creative worker; the cultures of organisations; participatory research, documentation and ethics. With the support of tutors and the Careers Centre, students secure a placement (minimum 70hrs or two weeks equivalent) in a relevant professional organisation. The assessment assignment is a reflection on both the placement setting and its place in the work sector, and on the students as worker and learner. The School follows the University guidelines and has an academic tutor responsible for all work placements, supported by a placements co-coordinator.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...

- identify and negotiate personal learning objectives within the context of a period of study within a relevant work context;
- analyse the role and context of a specific organisation;
- evaluate the experience in relation to theory and practice;
- analyse own work and working practices;
- reflect upon opportunities and implications for future employment.

Learning outcomes
Development of:
- understanding of the relation between the knowledge and skills acquired during study and employment;
- understanding of the organisation of the cultural industries and/or the creative worker;
- ability to define and evaluate own workplace related learning needs and attainment;
- understanding of the current ethical issues in work placements.

Skills outcomes
Individually determined by the specific workplace.


Syllabus

The module is introduced in October with a set of contextual lectures to cover the areas of:
- the purpose and nature of work experience in a ug degree programme;
- experiential learning and self -reflection;
- creative work and the creative worker;
- the cultures of organisations;
- participatory research, documentation and ethics

Students will work together with tutors and the Careers Centre to secure a placement (minimum 70hrs or two weeks equivalent) in a relevant professional organisation.

Seminars and tutorials provide for discussion and individual support.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Pre placement preparation is monitored via lecture and seminar attendance. Individuals missing essential input e.g. health and safety regulations, are seen individually by the module leader. Placement progress is monitored via contact with the host employer where each student has a named mentor/manager through the University placement approval documentation (currently a Tripartite Agreement and Risk Activity Management Plan). Assignment preparation is monitored via seminar and an individual tutorial.
