Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally a good honours degree in a relevant discipline. Applications are also welcome from candidates with relevant professional experience (i.e. cultural industries, education, arts, creative occupations, planning) and equivalent qualifications

Module summary

Creative Work provides an opportunity to explore and increase understanding about the labour market in the cultural industries. This is done through a combination of case studies, theoretical discussion and primary research.

Objectives

Through case studies and primary research, this module engages with critical debates about the conditions of labour in the cultural and creative industries, and its social, political and economic dynamics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand contemporary debates about creative work and its relationship to wider cultural, economic and social contexts and transformations;
- understand and critically assess theories of networking, entrepreneurship and social capital in relation to the cultural and creative industries sector;
- understand the specific processes involved in the production and distribution of particular cultural products and services in both public and private sectors;
- explain how specific cultural businesses and organisations operate in relation to networking, entrepreneurship, product development and personnel management.

Skills outcomes
On completion of the Module students should be able to:
- describe, understand and situate their own practice in relation to a range of employment contexts in the cultural industries.
- describe and explain the principal features of the labour market in the cultural industries.
- develop strategies for managing their own professional development in relation to this context.


Syllabus

In this module students will:
- address debates about creative work and how these relate to changing cultural, economic and social contexts
- develop these insights through lectures from academic staff and industry practitioners.
The conditions of creative workers in terms of motivation, remuneration, job security and legal rights will be explored in detail. The module will introduce notions of human capital, networking and social capital and how this functions in the working practices of cultural businesses and freelancers.
Using these concepts students will engage with contemporary critical debates around creative work.
