Module summary

The module is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of a topic or topics of their choosing, subject to the approval of the School and to the availability of one or more appropriately qualified supervisors. In Semester 1, students will attend classes in a relevant 20 credit Level 3 PRHS module, so they acquire skills and subject knowledge relevant to their extended essay, which will be written with the support of a supervisor in Semester 2. To prepare for the extended essay, students will write assignments totalling 2,000 words in Semester 1. They will also give a presentation on the proposed topic of their extended essay during the January exam period.

Objectives

To enable students to design and undertake a programme of learning and assessment in a field in Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, or History of Science of their choosing.

Learning outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding of the topics in Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, or History of Science that are studied in the module;
- Appropriate skills of independent research;
- Appropriate skills of working with a supervisor;
- Appropriate skills of oral presentation.


Syllabus

The details of the syllabus will be determined by the student in consultation with relevant staff. In Semester 1, students will attend a 20 credit Level 3 PRHS module of their choosing, in a field relevant to the proposed topic of their extended essay. (Call this the ‘supporting module’.) In consultation with the leader of the supporting module, they will submit one or more Semester 1 assignments totalling 2,000 words. The extended essay of 6,000 words will be written in Semester 2, on a topic to be agreed with the leader of the supporting module. The supervisor for the extended essay will be assigned according to topic and staff availability. Students will also prepare a presentation, to be delivered in the January exam period, on the proposed topic of the extended essay, with guidance from the leader of the relevant supporting module.

Students must not be formally enrolled on the supporting 20 credit module that they choose to attend in Semester 1.

Private study

Note that the teahing methods will VARY depending on which 20 credit Level 3 module the student is attending in Semester 1. The number of lectures and tutorials stated above is a guideline only.

The nature of private study activities will depend on the nature of assessment decided upon, but will include some of: research, writing, preparing presentations, discussions with other students.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Before starting work on their extended essay, students will write one or more assignments totalling 2,000 words, and give a presentation and answer questions on the presentation, for a total of 12 minutes, so they can receive feedback relevant to the proposed topic of the extended essay.
