Module summary

The dissertation module enables students to build on the understanding, skills, and learning that they’ve developed in the other modules of the programme and use this to create their own extended piece of independent work. Students will write a dissertation on a topic related to the programme and which demonstrates the ability to apply philosophical concepts/theories to analysis of a particular global ethical problem or challenge and formulate a significant line of argument that reflects their own solution or approach. Students will be allocated a supervisor who will provide feedback on the student’s work and advice on how to meet the learning outcomes. Students will choose their own topic, but topics must be approved by the Programme Director to ensure appropriate supervision is available.

Objectives

This module will provide the opportunity for students to undertake independent research in applied philosophy, gain an in-depth understanding of a specific topic of applied philosophy related to the programme, and to develop an original contribution or approach to the topic. It will enable students to build on the understanding, skills, and learning that they’ve developed in the other modules of the programme, synthesise understanding, concepts and arguments from different areas of moral and political philosophy, and the academic disciplines of Politics, Sociology or Religious Studies that are integrated in the programme.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to demonstrate:

1) the ability to undertake independent research

2) advanced knowledge and understanding of a specific topic related to the programme

3) advanced skills of critical analysis

4) the ability to formulate a rigorous and extended argument

5) independent thought and analysis

6) the ability to present their work in the academic style of scholarship in the discipline.

Syllabus

As this is an independent research module, the student will design their own dissertation topic and identify their own source material with some guidance from a supervisor.

Private study

Students will use the private study hours to (hours are an approximate guide):

Identify relevant source material (undertake literature searches, read material, make notes etc): 150 hrs

Develop a plan of their dissertation: 15 hrs

Prepare for supervisions: 6 hrs

Use the feedback from supervisions to develop their understanding, critical analysis, argument development and independent approach: 12 hours

Write a partial draft of their dissertation for formative feedback: 300 hrs

Use that feedback to refine and complete their dissertation: 111 hrs

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are provided with 6 hours of supervision during which their progress is monitored, and they are provided feedback on the extent to which they have demonstrated the module LOs as well as advice on how to improve.

They can submit a partial draft for feedback by the end of June. Feedback can be provided on up to 2/3rds of the dissertation. Supervisors can agree to provide feedback on smaller sections of the draft rather than a complete 2/3rds.
