Module summary
This module is for absolute beginners and assumes no previous knowledge of Czech. You will develop basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and you will learn the basic grammar rules of the language. By the end of the module you will have covered all the cases and tenses and be able to communicate on a range of everyday topics and to read and write simple texts.Objectives
The module aims to train students in basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Czech. Emphasis is placed both on grammar and communicative efficiency, and students are introduced to all the basic grammar points of the language and will be able to speak and write on several everyday topics.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- be able to understand and write basic texts;
- be able to hold basic conversations on several topics with native speakers of Czech;
- know the basics of Czech grammar (including all the cases in both the singular and plural, the past, present and future tenses and verbal aspect);
- have developed generic linguistic awareness skills that can be applied in the study of other languages;
- have learned and be able to talk and/or write about several important aspects of Czech culture (e.g. holidays and festivals, famous people and historical events).
Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- have a basic knowledge of the Czech language;
- demonstrate good linguistic and analytical skills;
- demonstrate good presentation and communication skills;
- have acquired skills essential for successful independent language learning;
- be familiar with a number of electronic resources for studying Czech and other languages.
Syllabus
All four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) are covered concurrently throughout the academic year.

Private study
160 hours of independent study to supplement in-class tuition. Students are expected to carry out weekly homework assignments and revise material covered in class on a regular basis.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be short weekly homework tasks and regular written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback.Detailed feedback will also be given on the reading test in S1 to support revision for the assessment in S2.
Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
