Module summary

This is an online (web based) module that is delivered using innovative films, audio clips, interactive tools and text through the VLE with supporting tutorials each week. The module identifies issues and solutions from a changing World influenced by environmental problems (such as climate change), social issues (such as increasing population) and economic factors (such as increasing wealth gaps). This module will prepares you by giving you knowledge of sustainability issues and the career skills to influence future change. There is exciting group work with students across the University with ‘real life' projects on campus. Topics you will cover include:1. Environmental issues such as climate change, chemical pollution, renewable materials and low energy buildings. 2. Social issues such as child labour, poverty, human development and wellbeing. 3. Economic issues such as corruption, living wage, ethical investment and micro finance. 4. Career skills such as multi-disciplinary approach, systems thinking, evidence-based decision-making, stakeholder & participatory approaches, scenario planning and managing change

Objectives

To introduce students to topics available in Discovery modules in the ‘Creating sustainable futures’ Discovery Theme. Provide a general overview of sustainability knowledge and skills as well as case studies from across the University campus. Designed to be suitable for any student studying at the University of Leeds.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
1. Have a general knowledge of the environmental, social and economic issues facing society.
2. Have a general understanding of the potential solutions to sustainability problems.
3. Have general knowledge of the career skills for sustainable futures including multi-disciplinarity and managing change.
4. Develop an appreciation for interdisciplinary work through tutorials and practical work.


Syllabus

This module consists of online (web based) delivery using films, audio clips, interactive tools and text of:
1. About sustainability:
a. Environmental impacts.
b. Environmental solutions.
c. Social justice impacts.
d. Social justice solutions.
e. Economic equity impacts.
f. Economic equity solutions.
2. Skills for sustainable futures:
a. Multi-disciplinary approach.
b. Systems thinking.
c. Evidence-based decision-making.
d. Stakeholder & participatory approaches.
e. Scenario planning.
f. Managing change.
3. Case studies assessing sustainability in practice from across the University.

You will also participate in a group work project on sustainability issues on campus.

Private study

Independent online learning will be the delivery of all learning material on Minerva. This has been prepared and funded by the Discovery Theme on ‘Creating Sustainable Futures’. There are self-contained parts to the online material as outlined in the syllabus above. Each online topic will take 3 hours to read, view videos, complete around 6-10 short exercises and read guided additional papers/books.

Private study will be 1x7 hours preparing for the tutorials, 8 hours completing the group work project, 10 hours completing report from group work and 11 hours preparing for the online MCQ test.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through:
1. Completion of the short exercises in the online material.
2. Participation in the group work/tutorials.
3. Participation in the group work project.
4. Completion of the group work project (1 x 1,500 report).
