Module summary

Building on skills and knowledge gained on the level one survey module SPPO1035 Introduction to Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa, this module will examine more closely a number of key aspects of the cultures of Portugal, Brazil and the PALOPs, including post-colonial relations between Portuguese-speaking countries; the place of popular religion in society; and race and identity in the Lusophone world. Examples of cultural production that will be analysed include films (fiction and documentary) and popular music and music videos. Secondary readings will be drawn from the areas of cultural studies, history, sociology and cultural anthropology

Objectives

The aim of this module is to deepen students' knowledge of a number of key aspects relating to cultural identity in Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa. It is intended to develop and refine perspectives on Lusophone culture and society introduced at level 1 and to interrogate a series of topics of a higher level of thematic difficulty than those studied at level 1. It aims to prepare students to undertake cultural analysis on Lusophone topics at level 3 with a greater degree of personal autonomy. It also seeks to encourage students to consider the role of the culture in contemporary society and the usefulness of analysing cultural artefacts in order to gain a great understanding of how contemporary societies are organised and how they function.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of the relationship between a number of key aspects of cultural production and socio-historical circumstances in the context of the Portuguese-speaking world;
2. An ability to analyse written and audio-visual material, including material in Portuguese;
3. An ability to communicate effectively in oral and written assignments;
4. An ability to construct reasoned and well-supported arguments and to communicate these effectively in both verbal and written modes.

Syllabus

This module will examine a number of key aspects of Luso-Brazilian cultural identity in detail, such as popular religious practices; Afro-Brazilian cultural practices; cultural relations between Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking nations in Africa, and the role of popular music in Lusophone society.

In lieu of a “live” oral presentation, re-sit students will be required to submit an audio recording of 20 minutes during the resit period. For the poster component, students submit a poster accompanied by a written script (of equivalent of 2 minutes oral presentation) during the resit period.
