Module summary

This module places the digital patterning (printing and laser cutting/engraving) of textiles into focus. The method of digital printing and laser patterning will first be introduced, and a comparison with analogue methods explored. Methods of managing the process of digital patterning including the particular needs and opportunities brought by a digital process will be explored. New aesthetic opportunities will also be discussed.

Objectives

The module will develop an understanding of the digital patterning processes, and through this understanding the opportunities, challenges and strategies to successfully integrate digital technologies and capitalise on new aesthetics beyond the established textiles norms will be gained.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to
1. understand the processes of digital patterning (digital printing and laser patterning)
2. fully articulate the relationship between digital and analogue processes
3. discuss in detail the processing steps in creating a digitally patterned textile product and the limitations associated therewith
4. appreciate the current role of digital patterning in the industry and its potential future course

Syllabus

The module will introduce the digital patterning of textiles; analogues methods will also be reviewed and the relationship between digital and analogue methods explored.
The processing steps in creating a digitally patterned textile product will be detailed, and the major implications of these steps explained. New aesthetic opportunities will be highlighted.
Awareness of the basic manipulation steps using major bespoke/textiles specific CAD/CAM software.

Private study

The VLE will be populated with additional material.
Substantial further reading to develop an awareness of the concepts, principles and other issues dealt with in lectures is required.
Each lecture is regarded as a sign post for further reading and enquiry, requiring an average of 6 hours of independent study per lecture.
Practical software skills will also need to be developed beyond the contact period.
Significant time investment is required for undertaking the EBL task. Additional access to laboratories and facilities for undertaking practical tasks in the context of the EBL is arranged via drop-in sessions

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through attendance at lectures, practical classes, and engagement with the discussion surrounding the EBL task in tutorials.
