Module summary

This module will be run in the second semester and aims to enhance a range of personal and professional related skills (technical applied transport skills and project management skills) by placing students in a multi-disciplinary project group (to reflect the range of transport masters programmes) and asking them to undertake a specific transport project as suggested by a client (an external organisation or ITS). The module will build upon the TRAN5015M Shaping Futures Transport Systems (SFTS) module to be run in the first semester; which outlines to students the contribution of different roles in the development of transport sector projects and in doing so helps equip them with the fundamental techniques necessary to work in inter-disciplinary teams.

Objectives

This module will build upon the SFTS module so that on completion of this module students will have an increased knowledge and understanding of: project design & management; the integration of various subjects as taught across the Transport masters programmes; the demands of applying technical transport skills to practical situations; the impact of the transport disciplines on society; and the practical transferable skills required of a transport professional.

Learning outcomes
- To understand principles of applied transport analysis
- Integration of transport principles covering the core transport masters programmes
- Application and demonstration of technical skills relevant to the students programme discipline
- Team working in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Communication, both outward facing (clients) and inward facing (project team)
- Working to a programme with agreed milestones
- Project reporting across a team

Syllabus

The module aims to enhance a range of personal and professional related skills (technical applied transport skills and project management skills) through the development of an applied transport project relevant to the professional transport world, from the initial brief through to a fully developed solution.

In order to demonstrate their competence and progress towards professionalism, students will be placed in a multi-disciplinary project team (to reflect the range of transport masters programmes) and asked to undertake a specific transport project as suggested by a client (an external organisation or ITS).

The project team will have to devise a project plan, leading to the production of a Gantt chart and agreed milestones. Tasks will be assigned to a multi-disciplinary who will agree upon roles and inputs to work towards the production of a final project report which will reflect their technical competence and which will also be presented to the client.

Within the context of the project, students will gain experience of project management, costing, appraisal/evaluation, technical skills, team-working, communication skills and reporting (both written and oral) skills. The project contains group and individual elements which will test their technical knowledge and expose them to team work that will enable them to undertake more demanding projects when they enter the professional transport world.

Specific lectures will be given by external/internal experts to teach useful technical skills, e.g., tools for project planning & project management. In addition, groups will be able to book a number of limited optional tutorial sessions with specific members of ITS to discuss specific technical issues, e.g. Network modelling, with all the group present to ensures technical knowledge is imparted across the board.

Regular project meetings will be held with the group project supervisor (member of staff) who will also act as the client, when required, to give a different perspective. During these meetings students will discuss progress to date and draw up future actions.

Private study

Each student will be assigned specific tasks and roles within the project team. These will be done in private study, with regular internal team meetings to discuss progress and implications for the project overall.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The overall progress of each project group is monitored by a member of ITS staff who will act as the group supervisor and oversee each step of the project. They will be supported by the module leader who will attend presentations, both formative and assessed.

The integrated project will be developed through a series of initial tasks which are submitted as the following formative exercises: (1) An individual appreciation of the brief; (2) A group report outlining an appreciation of the briefing and including an initial project plan together with a Gantt chart and agreed milestones, along with an assignment of tasks and roles; (3) an initial group presentation in which an understanding of the project and the project plan is outlined.

The formative exercises are designed to give feedback and given the importance of feedback in helping students learn through doing it is important that these exercises are submitted on time.

Methods of assessment

Coursework
Assessment typeNotes% of formal assessment
Reportindividual reflective report40.00
Group Project7000 words40.00
Oral PresentationGroup verbal presentation20.00
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework)100.00

Potentially complex situations may arise when elements of the assessment are failed. (For example, a group report may fail, but because some individual student reports may be strong, some students in a group may pass whilst others may fail). In this light, the relevant examination committee will determine appropriate re-assessment strategies which may differ between students within any one group.
