Module summary

Within this module, students will build upon and critically apply skills learned in their home institutions and integrate these into the cultural context of a host institution.They will engage with the complex nature of international contemporary art practices and to develop critical and analytical perspectives.They will also examine the histories and traditions of art practice to assist in situating themselves within the contemporary art world.They will also develop personal studio work, monitor the development of this work and apply critical skills in the appropriate modes of distribution and presentation.

Objectives

- To build upon and critically apply skills learned in their home institutions and integrate these into the cultural context of a host institution.
- To engage with the complex nature of international contemporary art practices and to develop critical and analytical perspectives.
- To examine the histories and traditions of art practice to assist in situating themselves within the contemporary art world.
- To develop personal studio work, monitor the development of this work and apply critical skills in the appropriate modes of distribution and presentation.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should have provided evidence of being able to demonstrate:
- A broad understanding of developing key concepts and formal approaches to art making in relation to individual responses to concerns identified within the complex nature of contemporary art practices
- A growing ability to identify and evaluate the most appropriate use of different materials, processes and environments in approaches to problem solving, independently and /or collaboratively, associated with an emerging individual practice.
- The ability to effectively communicate critical reflection on their work and locate this in a contextual framework of fine art contemporary practice.
- The ability to interact effectively with others.

Syllabus

Students must also engage with a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and visiting speakers throughout the programme which contributes to the discussions around contemporary art practice. 
Field trips, as determined by the studio staff, to attend exhibitions, galleries, or fine art fairs may regularly form part of the syllabus.

Private study

Students will work on projects throughout the semester, they will also negotiate with tutors using studio and workshop facilities.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress is monitored through regular group reviews and individual and group tutorials. Attendance registers for seminars, tutorials and workshop inductions are kept. Students are assigned a Studio Mentor who will keep up an overview of their progress and organise regular meetings: the role of personal tutor will be taken on by the Study Abroad Coordinator, but mentors will be a member of teaching staff appropriately qualified to support and advance the student’s practice.
