Syllabus
The module provides the student with an opportunity to undertake a high quality experimental project in a research laboratory based on a researched grant proposal on a topic agreed with the supervisor. The subject of the project will be related to the course options completed by the student during Semesters 1 and being undertaken during semester 2. The student will complete a detailed proposal in the form of a carefully researched grant proposal during the first 6 weeks. This should demonstrate that they have an understanding of the background literature a recognition of the problem they are addressing, and that sets out their detailed experimental plans. There will be regular meetings with the academic supervisor, normally on a weekly basis, with a proforma record of the outcome of the meeting. In addition there will be occasional tutorial sessions with groups of students to allow exchange of information about their project experiences and to provide them with general guidance on research and writing. The supervisor will also provide guidance on the format of the grant proposal and dissertation.
