Module summary

The module will consider foods from animals, plants and microorganisms, systems of production, the use of biotechnology for crop improvement, opportunities and challenges.

Objectives

Nearly all organisms are exploited by man, or are at least affected by man’s activities. To effectively exploit living organisms we need to be knowledgeable about them, knowledge derived from biology. This module is about how knowledge derived from biology is applied to the discipline of agriculture (food production). As an occupation it is an excellent example of how man exploits living organisms, as it encompasses all aspects of exploitation, i.e. use, protection and control. It also happens to be: the foundation of all civilisations, the world's largest industry, and a springboard for development. The module will consider foods from animals, plants and microorganisms, systems of production, the use of biotechnology for crop improvement, opportunities and challenges.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should:
1. Understand the process of domestication;
2. Be able to discuss the livestock revolution and associated challenges;
3. Understand the main system of animal production;
4. Be able to discuss the use of biotechnology for crop improvement and industrial microbiology

Skills outcomes
There are opportunities to develop transferable professional skills:
- Problem solving (research-based learning)
- Sourcing relevant literature (self-directed learning)
- Time management (assessment)
