Module summary- Part 1: takes place over 5 days with a combination of field visits. There is an introduction to the theoretical basis of plant classification and the resources available to identify plants. On the following days, representative plants will be collected from several field sites and identified to species level. Further field visits will use plant identifications to produce a 'phase 1' style summary of the vegetation of an area.- Part 2: covers lectures and field sessions on the National Vegetation Classification scheme and how to use quantitative assessments of plant abundance to assign areas to NVC communities.
ObjectivesOn completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Identify the common plant families and species;
- Be able to use plant identifications to produce a 'phase 1' report;
- Be able to use the plant data to assess which NVC community is present.
This module consists of an intense five days of activity in the field. To fit in with student timetables and other commitments, one or more of these days may be at a weekend.

Opportunities for Formative FeedbackThe work is carried out across two intense periods of field work, of 5 and 2.5 days length respectively.
Monitoring of progress will be carried out at the end of the initial period, when a written exercise and identification test take place.
