Module summary
This module is designed to provide graduates with the broad range of skills that they will need either to study conservation at a higher degree level or for conservation careers.Objectives
By the end of the module, students will have learnt a range of skills that are important for biodiversity and conservation. Skills include statistical analysis, research design, communication skills, ethics, fieldwork safety and first aid.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Perform appropriate statistical analyses for a range of common forms of data;
2. Interpret and present statistical evidence;
3. Plan research projects based on their understanding of the scientific method;
4. Understand the principles of emergency first aid and field safety;
5. Understand how to present ecological findings to various audiences;
7. Understand ethical considerations for ecological research.
Skills outcomes
Students will develop skills in the context of current research and practice in biodiversity and conservation.
Syllabus
The module will consist of lectures, linked computer sessions and tutorials covering the use of statistics to analyse ecological data, study design and communication skills. Workshops will cover fieldwork safety, ethics, public understanding of science, with practical sessions for first aid training.
