Module summary

Learn about the complex relationship between these two 'Asian giants'. Are they set on a collision course, or does the high level of trade between them offer hope that the two countries can forge a strong partnership? The module covers all aspects of the relationship ranging from the legacy of history to their attempts to work together in regional and global organisations.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- outline the history of Sino-Japanese relations and describe the main characteristics of the stages of relations from the earliest time to the present;
- identify the main determinants of post-war Sino-Japanese relations and relevant key events;
- identify and critically assess the different theories of post-war Sino-Japanese interaction;
- outline and evaluate the debates on future relations.

Syllabus

The module will cover the following: overview of Sino-Japanese relations up to 1894 and an analysis of the two Sino-Japanese wars; survey of post-war political and economic relations, and analysis of key domestic and external determinants of the relationship; outline of changes taking place in the relationship in the 1990s and the reasons for change; overview of debates about the future of China and Japan in the Asia-Pacific century.
