Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:- have consolidated and improved their capacity to read and write Thai;
- have mastered the system of tone identification and use, and be able to pronounce, Thai well;
- communicate effectively orally and in written form using at least 1,000 Thai words;
- read and write short sentences in Thai;
- have a sound understanding of Thai grammar and syntax;
- demonstrate basic receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
- have a sound understanding of spoken Thai and be able to talk, in a simple way and with reasonable fluency, about a variety of everyday topics;
- have a sound understanding of Thai social customs, manners, values and behaviour, together with a basic familiarity with Thai history, culture and geography.
Skills outcomes
Further basic oral and written communication stills in Thai; further knowledge of Thai culture.
Syllabus
This module builds upon, and further develops, the oral, aural and written language skills developed in EAST 1703/5140M, and seeks to extend and deepen students' knowledge and understanding of Thai grammar, syntax and vocabulary. It will extend students' ability to read and write short passages in the Thai script, and to communicate on subjects that they are likely to use in everyday situations in Thailand.
The module will extend and deepen students' familiarity with and understanding of Thai etiquette and politeness, deference, customs, manners, values and behaviour, all of which will be taught through language study.
