Module summaryThe Professional Skills Learning and Teaching Module is a compulsory aspect of the MQ/ToD award at either MA or Post Graduate Diploma level. The module addresses the practical Teaching and Learning components of the requirements. It entails the development and demonstration of professional learning and teaching skills through practical tasks that can be undertaken flexibility during the two-year programme. The learning is supported by the taught module materials in the associated knowledge –based modules (EDUC 5070M, EDUC 5072M, EDUC 5073M) and the practical work involved in the residential, tutorials and fieldwork set for this module.
ObjectivesThrough the completion of the Professional Skills: Learning, Teaching and Audiology you will achieve all of the practical competencies associated with the MQ/ToD audiology, teaching and learning components award required within an school/service based setting.
For the Audiology aspect of this module you will complete a working log of audiological skills and experiences over the two-year period that demonstrates the development of practical audiological skills with a range of deaf pupils. All sections of the portfolio must be completed and counter-signed by a colleague or the school/service audiologist to confirm that the task has been carried out successfully.
You will demonstrate your practical teaching skills through an assessed four-week teaching placement in an unfamiliar school or service setting. A further four-week placement will be required by students not currently in post, or with insufficient classroom experience (e.g. for those in post-16 sector, or in a peripatetic role).
You are expected to identify a teaching placement that will provide you with contrasting skills and experiences to your normal working context. The teaching placement normally takes place in year 2, when the taught modules have been completed.
On completion of this module, students will have the skills to:
- assess and interpret audiological information (3.13, 3.14)
- support deaf learners to optimally use audiological and other specialist technology and individual amplification packages(3.15, 3.16)
- explain audiological information to deaf learners, families
- mainstream staff and other non-specialists (3.17)
- provide an optimum learning environment for deaf learners
in terms of technology, well-being and participation (5.10, 5.11, 5.12, 5.17)
- identify individual planned learning outcomes and timescales for review and evaluation (5.13, 5.14)
- use a range of multimodal communication strategies to match individual communication and learning needs (5.15)
- design, produce and adapt teaching and learning materials, resources and equipment to be accessible and appropriate to deaf learners (5.16).
- encourage deaf learners to become more independent learners (5.18. 5.19)
- monitor and assess the progress of deaf learners and the effectiveness of specialised approaches (5.20, 5.21)
- contribute to and lead the multi-disciplinary review and reporting process that demonstrates accountability to key stakeholders (5.22, 5.23, 5.24, 5.25, 5.26, 5.27)
- promote positive behaviour and encourage deaf learners to monitor and control their own behaviour (6.14, 6.15)
- support the health and well-being of deaf learners and the development of positive relationships between deaf learners and their peers (6.16, 6.17, 6.18)
- promote partnership through the effective deployment of support staff and the involvement of families and other professionals (8.9, 8.10. 8.11, 8.18,8.19)

Private studyPrior to the placement students will identify objectives for their placement that enable them to build on the knowledge and skills developed across the programme modules
Students are required to complete a placement file that will include detailed planning for learning and teaching in the classroom. They will also maintain a reflective journal from which will inform their final reflective placement report.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackStudent progress is monitored through the regional tutorial system, placement visits, local supervision and the programme Training Plan.
Regional tutors will complete a final placement report in conjunction with the placement mentor.
