To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of how electronics technology is used in medical applications and healthcare, and to consider a range of possible future developments in this field.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Discuss the current and future role of electronics in modern medicine and healthcare.
2. Use mathematical and computational methods in the design, analysis and application of a range of sensors, bio-sensors and lab-on-chip technologies.
3. Apply strategic planning, systems implementation and operating methods to e-health systems.
4. Discuss the societal, ethical and security issues that pertain to e-health systems.


Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Introduction to technology in medicine
Sensors, biosensors and lab-on-chip technologies
Wearables, body area networks, ubiquitous personal computing
Telemedicine and healthcare informatics
Implantable and integratable electronic devices
Care-in-the-home and the ageing population
Societal Impact, ownership of health
Healthcare economics
Ethics, privacy and security

Private study

Students are expected to use private study time to consolidate their understanding of course materials, to undertake preparatory work for seminars, workshops, tutorials, examples classes and practical classes, and also to prepare for in-course and summative assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students studying ELEC modules will receive formative feedback in a variety of ways, including the use of self-test quizzes on Minerva, practice questions/worked examples and (where appropriate) through verbal interaction with teaching staff and/or post-graduate demonstrators.
