Module summary

This is a module which uses the literature of natural history and its associated methodology of observation to develop creative and critical skills of undergraduate students.

Objectives

To develop an awareness of the Anglophone tradition of nature writing and its observational methodology.
To develop critical and creative language skills in relation to the genre of nature writing.

Learning outcomes
Students will:
Have a historically informed understanding of natural history writing
Have both understanding and experience of the role of observation in natural history writing
Have developed critical reflection of their own writing, both critical and creative
Have an understanding of different kinds of natural history writing

Syllabus

This module combines critical and creative practices through reading a body of natural history texts with the undertaking of observational project work leading to the creative of a creative portfolio of natural history writing.
