Module summary

This module develops students’ skills in locating and interpreting reports on linguistic research and using these in their own writing. In doing so, the module covers basic concepts in linguistic research methodology and considerations in designing an original research study. The module is followed in Semester 2 by LING5480M Research Methods in Linguistics, in which students learn more about research methods and start to develop their own research proposals.

Objectives

This module aims to develop students’ skills in:
- recognising what constitutes an appropriate writing style in linguistics, and using this in their own work
- representing linguistic data and referring to primary and secondary sources according to current conventions in the subject area of linguistics
- locating and critically evaluating information on language-related topics and research articles in the subject area of linguistics

This module also aims to introduce students to the notions that:
- research in linguistics can be approached in different ways
- research in linguistics should be informed by concrete research questions and carried out rigorously and ethically

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students should be able to:
(1) demonstrate core skills in linguistic literature research, including finding, interpreting and citing sources
(2) critically evaluate research articles on language-related topics
(3) demonstrate awareness of the first steps involved in planning an original research project

Syllabus

The topics to be covered include:
- the nature of linguistic research;
- the roles and responsibilities of researchers in language studies;
- skills in locating linguistic data and secondary sources;
- skills in reading and writing research reports in linguistics
- skills in critically evaluating previous research findings;
- skills in the formulation of research questions in linguistics.

Private study

Students are expected to devote 20 hours of independent online learning time to this module: 10 times 2 hours of engaging with pre-recorded video content and related online self-study resources.
Students are expected to devote 115 hours of private study time to this module, with the following recommended breakdown:
• Following weekly reading suggestions and doing session preparation and follow-up as required: (10*4=) 40 hours
• Preparing written work for formative feedback: 5 hours
• Preparing the Assignment: 30 hours
• Preparing the Essay: 40 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The weekly workshops are a forum for monitoring students’ progress and use of the self-study materials developed for the module, and for providing formative feedback where relevant. Students receive detailed guidance on how to approach both assessed assignments, and have the opportunity to submit formative work for written feedback prior to submitting the first assessed assignment.
