Module summary

In this module, students are given an overview of research methodologies commonly used in linguistic studies. They are also given detailed guidance on how to approach the design and planning of their own original study, which they will undertake in LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics) after completing this module.

Objectives

This module aims to:
1. provide students with an understanding of research methodologies in a range of linguistics topics
2. prepare students for undertaking their own piece of original research in the subsequent module LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics)

Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. understand how research is undertaken in the main sub-disciplines of linguistics
2. understand the importance of interpreting, synthesising and critically evaluating source literature appropriately
3. show an appreciation of issues surrounding the collection, transcription and analysis of various types of language data, including relevant ethical considerations
4. demonstrate awareness of the need to design research projects in terms of research questions that can be systematically ‘operationalised’

Syllabus

Part of the module programme is team-taught, with staff members covering issues of research methodology that are relevant to specific areas of linguistics in which they have expertise. Weekly sessions also prepare students for undertaking their own research and writing it up in the form of a dissertation, as part of the subsequent module LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics). Among other topics, the sessions cover research ethics and planning, basic statistical and data analysis skills, and presents students with dissertation outlines appropriate for various types of project.

Private study

Students are expected to devote 15 hours of independent online learning time to this module: 10 times 1.5 hours of engaging with pre-recorded video content and related online self-study resources.
Students are expected to devote 120 hours of private study time to this module, with the following recommended breakdown:
• Following weekly reading suggestions and doing session preparation and follow-up as required: (10*4=) 40 hours
• Developing their dissertation research proposal: (10*3=) 30 hours
• Preparing the Critique: 50 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The weekly workshops are a forum for monitoring students’ progress and use of the self-study materials developed for the module, and for providing formative feedback where relevant. Students receive detailed guidance on how to approach the assessed assignment and are encouraged to submit formative drafts of their developing dissertation proposals for written feedback, in preparation for LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics).
