2. prepare students for undertaking their own piece of original research in the subsequent module LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics)

Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. understand how research is undertaken in the main sub-disciplines of linguistics
2. understand the importance of interpreting, synthesising and critically evaluating source literature appropriately
3. show an appreciation of issues surrounding the collection, transcription and analysis of various types of language data, including relevant ethical considerations
4. demonstrate awareness of the need to design research projects in terms of research questions that can be systematically ‘operationalised’

Skills outcomes
(These are covered in Learning Outcomes above.)

Syllabus

Part of the module programme is team-taught, with staff members covering issues of research methodology that are relevant to specific areas of linguistics in which they have expertise. Weekly sessions also prepare students for undertaking their own research and writing it up in the form of a dissertation, as part of the subsequent module LING5350M Dissertation (Linguistics and Phonetics).
