Objectives

The module aims to provide students with an introductory level of understanding of Management. It draws on contemporary management theory to enable them to gain an understanding of the development of the Management discipline, the structure of business organisations, the environment in which they operate the different management functions within organisations and the traits of successful managers.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of management as an academic discipline
- Recognise basic business organisations and their objectives; business decision-making and the business operating environment
-Identify the different functional areas of management (Planning, Staffing, Organising, Controlling and Leading)

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Draw on management theory to recognise and demonstrate the traits and qualities of a successful company and manager

Schools of management thought (1 week)
Guest speaker – 'Becoming a Manager' (1 week)
Challenges for Managers in the 21st century (2 weeks)
Key trends affecting management and business
Management reaction and capability

Seminars:
Seminars will include theory based sessions and practical examples of management in context. In addition essay writing as a skill will also be covered as part of the seminar sessions.
