Module summary
This module is suitable for students from any discipline who are interested in learning more about leading and managing small and family businesses. It also provides students with the knowledge and skills to explore growth strategies in the context of small and family businesses and to understand their own skills and attributes in leading and managing these businesses. The module is interactive in delivery and uses discursive seminars for smaller groups (5 sessions), as well as introductory topic lectures (10 sessions). The module is delivered with a one hour lecture each week and a 2-hour interactive seminar every two weeks. Students also attend one evening panel session linked to the Discovery theme where all students can hear and participate in themed discussions.Objectives
This module will introduce students to the concepts of leading and managing small businesses, including family businesses. This module will present the peculiarity, importance and diversity of small businesses. The module should help students understand the specific approaches in leading, managing and growing small and family businesses by combining theory with practice. The module will also focus on the planning, resourcing and implementation that growth strategies require in these businesses. Learning will be supported through cases studies, workshops and guest speakers.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Identify the specific characteristics and management processes of small and family businesses
- Explore leadership and growth in small and family businesses
- Evaluate internal aspects in small and/or family firms by analysing and assessing their current situation through the application of theories.

Private study
After each introductory lecture session students are expected to prepare in their own time for the interactive activities in the subsequent linked workshop. Students will also undertake private study and independent learning through exploring the set readings, online materials, and other materials as directed by the module team. This private study and independent learning will support the student learning in the classroom.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive feedback through the seminar discussions that link to the activities set as preparation for the assessment. In addition there will be an opportunity to practice and receive feedback from case studies linking to the assessment.Methods of assessment

Students will have to complete an online assessment at the end of the module. This will take place during the examinations period and will be time bound. The assessment will not take 48 hours to complete, but the students will have a 48 hour time period in which to complete it. The resit for this module will be 100% by examination.
