Module summary
This module provides the opportunity to identify and develop research in an area of interest, and produce a document of up to 15,000 words. You are supported in this endeavour by a supervisor who will work with you on a small group and one-to-one basis at key points throughout the process.Objectives
This is an optional module for participants who have successfully completed the Senior Leadership apprenticeship programme. Successful completion of the module will enable participants to achieve an MSc in Executive Leadership.The module requires participants to develop a research proposal; select, evaluate, analyse and synthesise the literature; and to carry out research to demonstrate their ability to plan and manage the research process in order to answer a research question.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, participants will be able to:
1. Plan and carry out appropriate research in line with practical, methodological and ethical constraints and structures.
2. Critically evaluate literature relevant to the research question(s).
3. Synthesise literature and other collected data to produce a document clearly expressing the research process undertaken along with the findings and implications of the research project.
Skills outcomes:
4. The ability to identify relevant research questions and to plan and carry out research to address them.
5. The ability to select and critically analyse academic and other literature.
6. The ability to collect data and analyse the data to address a research question(s).
7. The ability to present complex information effectively in writing for academic and non-academic audiences.
Syllabus
The initial phase of the module delivery will require participants to complete a block of online learning in order to gain an insight into:
- Key issues relating to research methods and the successful completion of an M level dissertation.
- Support materials available from the University (e.g. Skills@Library) and the practicalities of completing a dissertations (e.g. effective online literature searches).
Building on the content of the online studies participants will attend a series of onsite workshops over two days. The workshops will provide participants with a more detailed insight into the academic practices, processes and practicalities of successfully completing an M level dissertation.
Subsequent to the onsite workshops a series of webinars will be delivered in sync with the anticipated student progression (e.g. a webinar on selecting an appropriate research question and conducting a literature review will be delivered near the start of the module and a session on primary data collection and analysis will occur at an appropriate later date). These webinars will help reinforce/remind participants of the issues considered during the onsite workshops. They will also provide participants with an opportunity to debate and discuss issues/questions with peers and the module leader.

Private study
Independent online learning refers to non-facilitated directed learning. Participants will work through bespoke interactive learning resources and reflective activities hosted on a VLE.The private study time will provide participants with opportunity to engage with and complete the dissertation.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- The module’s digital learning materials provide opportunities for participants to check their understanding and gain feedback on select issues/concepts.- The three webinars and onsite workshops provides opportunities for formative feedback from peers and academics.
- Throughout the duration of the dissertation formative feedback will be available form a dissertation supervisor.
- Skills@Library provide numerous workshops. Participants may have the opportunity to pose questions/receive formative feedback at these sessions.
