Module summary
This module interrogates current debates around health, equity and development. It introduces critical perspectives and questions some of the ideologies and assumptions lying behind health policies and development approaches. Through an analysis of key health policy issues, the module explores the complex, messy and political world of health policy making.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- Demonstrate a critical understanding of different definitions of political, social and economic development;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships between development, poverty and health, with particular reference to equity issues;
- Give examples of and explain the role that different actors at local, national and international level might play in promoting health;
- Explore the role the health sector might play in improving people's health, given the inter-sectoral origins of many health problems;
- Critically analyse health policies and health policy processes, using case studies as examples.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge of models of health and development, and frameworks for policy analysis will allow students to:
a) Analyse health policies;
b) Examine the role that different stakeholders at local, national and international level, might play in promoting health.
Skills outcomes
Application of policy analysis frameworks; application of critical thinking skills

Private study
Private study includes:- Preparing for, and conducting assignments: 80 hours. This represents approximately 24 hours for assignment one (worth 30%) and approximately 56 hours for assignment two (worth 70%).
- Reading prior to and following each seminar, lecture, and group learning session. In some cases, this will be linked to the involvement in the web-based discussion forum.
Independent online learning will include involvement in module specific web-based discussion forum (approximately 1 hour x 14 sessions).
