Module summary

There is a competitive application process for this module, which will be clearly communicated to you during semester 2 of year 2 of your programme. You will participate in a short placement in a work environment. This could be in a company, a charity or public sector organisation. The School of Physics and Astronomy will provide the list of placement providers. You are allowed to find your own placement, however this will need approving by the module team. The placement will last for at least 30 hours. This may comprise of attending the work placement for a few hours a week over several weeks or for a block of one week, or any combination as agreed between the placement provider, the student and the module leader. The placement can take place at any time during the academic year before the end of the Easter break. The placements will not normally be paid.Key features are the preparation and planning for, and subsequent reflection and dissemination on the experience, to ensure that you derive maximum benefit from the placement.

Objectives

Rationale:
Many students have little or no experience of a working environment that relates to graduate employment, particularly related to their field of study. The concept of this module is to provide students with workplace exposure in a way that allows them to reflect on and gain benefit from such a placement. The module will be based on the long-established and highly successful ‘Physics into Schools’ module.
The OfS funded WRIPA-PLUS project has provided us with a golden opportunity to implement a work experience module. This will give students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience during term time within a local business, broadly related to physics. A 0.5FTE Business Development Officer has been appointed to find such placement providers.
This module will provide the vehicle to fulfil two of the WRIPA –PLUS objectives; to provide more placement opportunities and to find placements and employers related to Physics in the region.
The module:
Students will participate in a short placement in a work environment. This could be in a company, a charity or public sector organisation.
The placement will last for at least 30 hours. This may comprise of attending the work placement for a few hours a week over several weeks or for a block of one week, or any combination as agreed between the placement provider, the student and the module leader. The placements will not normally be paid.
The key aspects in ensuring that the student derives benefit from the placement are the preparation and reflection aspects.

Gain increased commercial/workplace awareness;
Be better able to self-evaluate, reflect and target set;
Be able to identify and articulate the skills required for employment;
Put their Physics learning into context and apply the skills that they have developed
Be better able to plan for their future.

Application of physics knowledge and skills from some of the year 1 and year 2 modules.

Private study

Preparation for the placement, travel requirements to and from the placement, reflecting on the placement experience after each session, writing the reflective report, preparing for the poster session and delivery of the poster session.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The module leader will be in regular email contact with the students to monitor how the placements are going and will address any problems that may arise. The module assistant will have interim contact with the placement provider to check for any issues.
Students will need to provide information in writing about their intended work pattern before the end of semester 1 at the latest.
