Module summary

This module is designed to provide a view of current &/or ‘hot’ topics in modern structural geology, over a range of scales from microscopic to continental, based on the current research interests of the module presenters. Structural geology is a vibrant research area that impacts crucially on academic & economic careers & also links with most other branches of Earth Sciences.


On completion of this module students should be able to:
- understand the development of structures in different tectonics settings and scales,
- apply appropriate structural models to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of folds and fault arrays,
- integrate structural and geophysical data and interpretations.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. understand how structures form in different tectonic settings & scales
2. combine a range of skills to understand regional-scale structural histories
3. relate structural geological expertise to other branches of Earth Sciences and beyond, including future academic/industrial career opportunities


- Deformation regimes (contractional, extensional and transpressional/transtensional);
- Microtectonics;
- Geodynamics (lithospheric stress states, including rheology).

3 independent assessments involve private/independent study/work. 2 assessments are the same as the Level 3 module & include practical classes. The third assessment is at M Level and is independent.
