Module summary
This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language. The module's objectives are to reinforce and develop grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, to perfect translation skills from and into Portuguese, and to develop the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension of the Portuguese language. In the first Semester, the module is composed of two language classes per week, plus one hour of unsupervised grammatical consolidation and one hour of unsupervised audiovisual study. In the second semester a weekly reading class, using a range of texts on Portuguese, Brazilian and Portuguese-African literature, culture and history, will replace the grammar consolidation hour. Students who are unsure if their level of Portuguese is sufficient to enroll on this module are invited to speak to tutors in advance. We welcome students with knowledge of continental and Brazilian Portuguese equally, and the timetable is arranged to suit the student cohort.Students with no prior knowledge of Portuguese should consider SPPO1080/SPPO1081: Portuguese Language for Beginners or SPPO1025 Beginners Portuguese.Those who do well in this module can, depending on their programme, apply to change to Joint Honours Portuguese in Level 2.Objectives
This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language. The module's objectives are to reinforce and develop grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, to perfect translation skills from and into Portuguese, and to develop the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension of the Portuguese language. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Portuguese and English.In addition, the module aims to provide students with a general background knowledge of the history and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world

Syllabus
In Semester 1 students will have weekly classes which will focus on consolidating grammatical structures and vocabulary range, and students will practise both oral and written language exercises. Regular written translation work both from and into Portuguese will be carried out in class and as homework. Conversation classes and weekly audiovisual hours will strengthen both oral skills and aural comprehension, and reading comprehension will be developed via the analysis of works of Portuguese and Brazilian literature and other written material in the foreign language. Continuous assessment will take place in class and via work done at home.
Semester 2 will be devoted to work on either an extended project on an element of contemporary Lusophone society or culture or on a translation project. Weeks 1 and 2 will be devoted to looking at the layout and organisation of the project and choice of topics. From week 3 onwards students will work independently with supervision from a member of staff of the subject-area.

Private study
This module is also designed to equip students with a range of transferable study skills and, therefore, great emphasis is given to independent work. In semester 2, in particular, students will work independently on their projects, guided by meetings with their designated supervisor.100 hours - Grammar reinforcement

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Regular in-class written and oral assignment.- Specific written feedback on all pieces of assessed work.
- General written and oral feedback is regularly given to students to identify and address any difficulties at an early stage.
- During semester 2, progress on project work will be monitored via regular one-to-one meetings with the student's supervisor.

The resit for any written component of this module will take the form of a 1 hour closed exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a skype or campus-based 10 minute oral exam .
