Module summary
The module will provide students with practical application of advanced anatomy knowledge for those structures commonly stressed during physical activity, how to assess injury, and appropriate treatment strategies. Practical experience will be provided by attending an SEM clinic as part of SPSC5134M. Recommended eLearning resources will be identified (including online musculoskeletal texts and recorded lectures), and tasks set according to the structure under study. Students will be expected to complete a series of practical competencies, and maintain a reflective log detailing progress and group performance. Assessment will take the form of individual case study presentations, summative online MCQs and individual OSCE stations. Students will be expected to complete two modules from the free online FIFA football medicine diploma.Objectives
The objectives are for students to:- recognise common musculoskeletal pathologies
- recognise common sporting injuries
- take a history, assess and recognise management strategies for common musculoskeletal injuries
- gain experience in time management, self-directed learning, and on-line resource access
- gain experience in effective working practices for teams in a clinical setting, report writing and individual presentation
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) critically assess and understand the origin of common musculoskeletal pathologies and sporting injuries with relation to the following anatomy:
- Head injuries and concussion
- Shoulder
- Arm and elbow
- Hand and wrist
- Spine
- Hip
- Knee
- Ankle and foot
b) apply this knowledge to develop an understanding of the aetiology of common sporting injuries, not exclusive to but including:
- Swimming
- Rugby
- Basketball
- Football
- Dance
- Tennis
- Boxing/MMA
- Athletics and endurance
- Mass participation events
c) take a history; interpret and present their findings; critically assess and evaluate management strategies for common musculoskeletal injuries

- consolidate advanced anatomy knowledge on muscles, bones, nerves, blood supply;
- apply this experience to aid recognition of specific injuries and their appropriate treatment.

Private study
Private study will include engaging with online resources provided, preparation for practical assessment sessions, and completion of eLearning certificates in relevant subjects.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students twice during the module to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.Students will have the opportunity to self-assess progress by means of formative MCQ assessments at strategic points in the module, based on suggested reading material and on-line resources available.
Clinical tutors will be available during the practical sessions to answer any questions the students may have, and monitor progress (e.g. assess clinical competence in assessments and diagnoses).
Students will receive feedback from tutors during practical sessions and following group presentations.
