Module summary

This module will enable students to understand how colour is used in all stages of the textile workflow including design, communication, colorant selection, production and retail. It will equip students with knowledge and understanding of colour that will enable them to elucidate why certain colours are used, what the implications for manufacturing are, and what colours communicate to consumers. The module will approach colour from a multi-disciplinary perspective and will enable the students understand colour choices from the viewpoint of the designer, the technologist and the consumer.

Objectives

This module will provide specialist knowledge and insightful understanding of colour communication and forecasting relationships for textile technology, fashion technology, and retailing. The module will equip students with the skills to apply colour theory in the textile design process from the perspective of the designer, the technologist and the consumer.

Learning outcomes
On completion the students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Understand the ontology of colour and methods by which it can be communicated.
2. Analyse the role of colour in the textile design process from the perspective of the designer, the technologist and the consumer.
3. Evaluate the role of colour forecasting in the manufacturing-retail supply line for consumer textiles using appropriate critical frameworks.
4. Understand historical, contemporary and emerging practices of colour forecasting.
5. Interpret the way in which colour forecasting impacts on decisions that are made at different stages of the design, production and retail of consumer textiles.


Syllabus

The students will be introduced to creative and technical aspects of colour and the importance of colour in textile design, manufacturing and retail. Colour communication will be discussed including both visual and instrumental methods and the role of language. Students will become familiar with contemporary colour forecasting and will understand how colour forecasting impacts decisions at different stages of the manufacturing-retail supply line. Students will understand the importance of colour to consumer purchase behaviour in retail environments. Learning material will also include case studies for a range of end uses.

Private Study and Independent Learning - Detail private study and independent learning outside formal classes as a guide to students about what is expected from them for the module
• 9 x 4hours reading for lectures: 36 hours
• 3 x 2 hours preparation for tutorials: 6 hours
• 4 x 4 hours preparation for Practicals: 16 hours
• preparation pre assignment (project report): 53 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Project requirements will be set up in week 2; Project assignment, and practical report will be set and their criteria will be explained in the first lecture of the module;
Each student will submit a coursework proposal in week 5 and get feedback in the same week;
Each student will review a journal article and give an oral presentation to introduce the article in week 7 and get feedback in the same week.
Student will use the one practical sessions to carry out testing either their ideas or their products, Student will have chance to ask questions on their coursework assignment after each lecture and in seminar.

- Students will work on an assignment project in developing new colour palette or colour specification for textile colour design with the topic and product chosen by themselves; - Student will ask to read a paper in relevant colour topic and give 10 minutes oral presentation to present the paper - Student will attend practical session to measure pair of colour of textile and predict their colour difference.
