Module summary

This module provides the foundation and underpinning principles of Respiratory and Sleep Science. Students will develop the knowledge required to apply to clinical practice and will be taught utilising blended learning approach providing both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.

Objectives

This module will give the students a foundation in the underpinning principles of Respiratory and Sleep Science. Students will develop the knowledge required to apply to practice. Utilising blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:

1. Describe the role of Respiratory and Sleep science in relevant patient pathways

2. Explain the application of safe and effective clinical practice in physiological measurement associated with Respiratory and Sleep science

3. Explain the basic principles underpinning the routine investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of Respiratory and Sleep diseases

4. Understand the anatomy and physiology related to respiratory and sleep sciences.

Skills outcomes
During this module students will develop the underpinning knowledge and skills required for clinical placement. Specifically skills relating to respiratory and sleep science.

Private study

Students will require private study throughout the module. During independent online working students will be required to utilise online resources, workbooks (directly related to each week’s lectures/tutorials/practicals) and their learning will be consolidated in subsequent contact sessions. During private study students will be encouraged to access and utilise original research and other scholarly articles in order to support learning and prepare for summative assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will gain formative feedback through work completed within tutorials. Additionally formative feedback will be received on the formative examination and module quizzes.

Methods of assessment

Exams
Exam typeExam duration% of formal assessment
Standard exam (closed essays, MCQs etc) (S1)3 hr 100.00
Total percentage (Assessment Exams)100.00

The examination will be in the form of a timed 3-hour unseen, online exam. The examination slot will be open for 24-hours. PSRB approval will be required. Examination pass mark for this level 1 module is 40, if this is not achieved the student will be offered further attempts in line with School policy. Re-sit will occur within the August assessment period . The students will be provided with a workbook during week 1 which supports the theoretical aspects of Respiratory science. To support application in practice the students are required to complete weekly, formative respiratory calculation tasks. These will be reviewed weekly during teaching. This will allow students to self- evaluated their progress and seek early support when required.
