Pre-requisite qualifications

Students who enrol on this module must have successfully completed year 1 of the BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) Programme.

Module replaces

This module is taking part of the ARCS3264 content currently taught in year 3 and moving it into year 2. This is in line with placement requirements and workforce planning.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Module summary

This module will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts associated with invasive cardiac investigations and treatment and broaden their knowledge in the application of management processes for patients with a range of cardiac disease processes including paediatric and congenital.

Objectives

This module will provide students an in-depth knowledge in the principles and application of procedures taking place with the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, including Coronary angiography, PCI, IVUS, balloon pump, FFR. Students will develop knowledge that they will then apply within their practice module. Utilising a blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.

Learning outcomes
1. Evaluate the physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology relevant to cardiac catheterisation

2. Identification, analysis and measurement of procedure specific data including both normal and abnormal measurements

3. Formulate accurate and detailed reports relevant to the specific procedure

4. Develop analytical and problem solving skills

Skills outcomes
This level 2 module will develop subject specific skills transferable into practice. Specific skills will be the interpretation, analysis, and accurate measurement of cardiac catheterisation data. Interpretation of cardiac catheterisation data will be introduced, practiced, and assessed throughout the module. Utilising simulated learning skills will be developed practically as well as theoretically within the module.


Syllabus

The module will cover a full range of procedures, principles and applications carried out for both right and left heart catheterisation procedures and will be linked to key concepts of Circulatory control, the cardiac cycle, control of cardiac output, the effects of Heart failure on circulation, Cardiac Drugs: effects functions and application and the effects of cardiac disease on these concepts.



The module will also cover the key changes linked to cardiac disease and the associated treatment options.

Private study

Students will be provided with workbooks closely linked to the lecture sessions to consolidate learning. Workbooks will constitute independent learning alongside utilising the epicardio simulation software to further develop and consolidate learning. Students will be expected to access online journals and websites to consolidate understanding of clinical guidelines relevant to practice.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Workbook which will run alongside the lecture delivery, this will be provided in 4 parts consisting of data interpretation and measurement as well as short answer questions. These will be in similar format to examination questions to allow students formative feedback. Feedback will also be provided on group work set throughout the module. Formative work listed will be adjusted based on the cohort requirements.
