Entry criteria for BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) programme

Students who enrol on this module must have successfully completed year 1 of the BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) Programme.

Module summary

This module will develop non-invasive & invasive clinical skills within the cardiac physiology practice settling.

Objectives

This module will build upon the theory delivered within university taught modules. This will enable students to develop a broad appreciation of the range of work undertaken within healthcare science, providing students with an overview of the professional aspects of clinical practice including diagnostic investigations, ethical considerations, professional responsibilities, and the importance of potential for employability.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:


1. Discuss the underpinning principles of integrating knowledge of basic and clinical science associated with non-invasive diagnostic cardiac physiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

2. Review and evaluate routine tasks in relation to with non-invasive diagnostic cardiac physiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

3. Produce a professional online portfolio which cumulatively records/provides evidence of the skills, knowledge and attitudes gained with regards to with non-invasive diagnostic cardiac physiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

4. Demonstrate increased knowledge, understanding and confidence in application of the core skills in clinical practice in with non-invasive diagnostic cardiac physiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

5. Discuss a range of professional issues including patient centred care, communication, diversity, health inequalities, leadership, team work, self-awareness, ethics, infection control, health inequalities, quality assurance, regulation and time management.

Skills outcomes
During this module students will enhance the skills required for non-invasive diagnostic cardiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures and treatments.

Syllabus

Indications and contra-indications for non-invasive diagnostic cardiac physiology tests and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

- Health and Safety including safe handling of reagents

- Graphical representation of results and interpretation

- Safe decontamination of equipment

- Quality standards, control and assurance for all activities

- Electrocardiography including recognition of the changes related to Age, gender, ethnic origin and pregnancy

- Blood pressure measurement

- Cardiac Catheterisation pressure trace analysis

- Intermediate life support

Private study

Students will receive private study throughout this module. This time will be utilised to familiarise and develop understanding, demonstrate clinical competency for non-invasive diagnostic procedures and cardiac catheterisation procedure which will be achieved utilising local policies and national guidelines.

Students will be encouraged to seek previous audits of practice to develop an understanding of how these contribute to protocol development.

Time will be utilised to compile the online work based profile and preparation for summative assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress during this module will be monitored via clinical visits and personal tutor sessions.

Both assessed pieces of work must be passed in order to pass the module.  There is no compensation between the two pieces of work.  Failure of either element will result in a resit opportunity for the failed component(s) of assessment and a capped overall module mark of 40% following a pass at resubmission. Case based discussion will have to 1 re-sit opportunity Practice profiles have 1 re-sit attempt.
