Module replaces

CIVE5532M - Wastewater and Organic Waste Management

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

To enable students gain deeper insights into engineering processes and systems for
wastewater management, including energy and resource recovery; and apply knowledge gained
to a real-world problem culminating in the submission of a design coursework. The topics
below are now being refreshed or newly introduced and included in the module. The
revised module reinforces the basic understanding of the design and operation of
processes and systems for wastewater treatment. In particular, it places emphasis on
the biological aspects. Furthermore, it provides an introduction to recent developments and
more advanced techniques in wastewater engineering. The students will develop deeper
knowledge of the principles involved (physical, chemical and biological) in wastewater assessment and treatment. An engineering case based problem is also being re-introduced, and
this will be complimented with laboratory analysis.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, the students will:
1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the ability to apply and adapt these to unfamiliar situations.
2. Ability to generate an innovative design of a wastewater treatment system.
3. Ability to apply appropriate engineering analysis methods to solve complex problems
4. Gain deeper insights into engineering processes and systems for wastewater management;
5. Understand opportunities offered from recovering and recycling of wastes;
6. Be able to select and size the key unit operations for wastewater treatment facilities;
7. Estimate energy value of wastes; and understand energy and resource recovery from wastewater;
8. Apply knowledge gained in lectures, site visit and general reading to a real world problem which will require submission of a design coursework.
9. Gain experience of working as part of an engineering team and demonstrate a high level of initiative and responsibility.
