Module summary

Designers must extend their knowledge to think strategically, add a design value, and build a design leadership ability. This practical module introduces design management and design thinking for students to achieve the above targets. Students will expand their knowledge about design as an added value for business and as a strategy to reach innovative products and services. To achieve this goal, students will use design thinking as a strategic tool to identify and analyse the root causes of problems. Additionally, students will explore how to identify the target user and build a consumer-centred design solutions. Then, they will use different creative methods and tools to solve problems, identify effective solutions and evaluate them. Students will be able to see the design business from the perspective of market competency and will learn how to use the different innovation models to achieve market success through implementing the strategic design in both product and service design sectors. Students will explore how to establish a design management strategy across the organisation and how to implement it in managing creative teams. Then, they will learn how to measure the impact of design strategies in business.

Objectives

· Learn how design is applied inside organisations on the operational, tactical and strategic levels to achieve value and innovation in different applications, including but not limited to healthcare, fashion, education, social innovation, etc.
· Explore design thinking utilisation to explore problems, iterate prototypes and conceptualise solutions · Apply various tools and strategies in designing consumer-centred solutions, including but not limited to digital technologies, materials, service design, etc.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of design as a tool to solve problems and achieve innovation for creative products and services.
2. Demonstrate a clear understanding of design management and its contribution inside the organisation on operational, functional, and strategic levels.
3. Apply critical design thinking to solve problems, value-creation and identify root causes.
4. Evaluate the level of strategic innovation and its characteristics for products and services.
5. Critically reflect and report on their design management and design thinking practice

Skills outcomes
This module helps students to develop design and creative skills related to the business strategy and leaderships. They will develop the following skills:

Syllabus

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and practical sessions. The lecturers will introduce the students to the design management principles and how design is utilised inside organisations. Lectures will introduce the theory and professional practice of the design thinking process. The practice will allow the students to practice the design thinking process from organisational and strategic perspectives to develop innovative design projects.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive formative assessment based on the following:
· During week 7: Verbal in-class feedback on their progress in the poster presentation assignment.
· During week 12: Verbal in-class feedback on their progress in the portfolio report assignment.
