Module summary

This module builds on the Chinese learned in EAST1010. Students attend an additional conversation class with a native speaker.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- Have extended their knowledge of Chinese as learned in EAST1010 and increased their vocabulary, both written and spoken;
- Be familiar with features of Chinese sentence structure including complements, particles, aspects, comparisons more complex than those studied in EAST1010;
- Be able to read short Chinese texts;
- Be able to translate more complex sentences and short texts from English into Chinese and vice versa;
- Have improved their aural understanding and be able to answer questions on taped materials;
- Be able to conduct simple Chinese dialogues and to interpret a few exchanges.

Syllabus

- Grammar: the complex features of Chinese sentence structure. All kinds of complements, particles, aspects, comparison etc are introduced with supporting vocabulary items
- Reading and translation: more Chinese reading materials are used. Translation of texts, incorporating grammar and vocabulary, are included.
- Comprehension: language laboratory classes are held weekly in which students are expected to listen to taped materials and answer sets of questions on them.
- Conversation: small-group sessions are held weekly with a native speaker.

1 hour preparation per lecture: 22 hours;

3 hours written assignments & character practice per week: 33 hours;
