Module summaryIn this module you will deepen your knowledge, develop your skills and gain experience from real-life education settings. You will work alongside teachers or other education professionals under the guidance of tutors from the School of Education. You will explore how education policy is implemented in practice. You will also examine how the management and leadership structures of educational institutions function and how management decisions are made and applied. You will consider social, political and ethical aspects or working in education and deepen your understanding of the relationship between pedagogic theory and practice. You will also extend your experience of workplace observation and of preparing/gathering resources and activities for education.
ObjectivesThis module is designed to support students in gaining a deeper understanding of the practice of education. You will look beyond the immediate context of the classroom, and explore the leadership and management structures, how these operate and how they influence the day-to-day work of the education setting in which they are placed. Students will be expected to apply theoretical knowledge gained in previous modules so that they can fully understand the relationship between theory and practice.
The placement may also provide an appropriate setting for the final year project for students who wish to undertake empirical research.
On completion of the module, which includes a minimum 40 hour placement in a school or other educational organisation in the region (both observing and assisting with planning and delivery of teaching or services), you will be able to demonstrate:
- That you have completed the required placement hours
- That you have developed an understanding of the leadership and management issues in educational settings.
- That you are able to relate ideas and literature covered throughout the programme to the realities of education practice.
- That you understand classroom management and support issues and are able to apply practical and appropriate solutions.
- That you are aware of current political and social contexts for education and you are sensitive to such issues in your planning of resources.
- That you are able to critically analyse and reflect on your experience.
The module will consist of a series of group seminars which will support students in their placements. A focus will be placed on the student’s ability to reflect on and review their own practice and they will be encouraged to openly discuss and debate their own assumptions, challenges, successes, learning and progress. Outside speakers such as school governors and headteachers and SEND coordinators will be invited to provide insight into the different roles within school/education communities.
The seminars will mix theory with practical activities to cover:
- Understanding the educational context
- Leadership and management in education
- Understanding the impact of policy and politics in education
- Social, political and ethical aspects of working in education
- Best reflective practice

Private studyStudents will spend their private study time preparing learning materials for their placement, preparing and reading for seminars, and writing an ongoing reflective log.
