Module summary
Objectives
Students are required to define an experimental research investigation or design problem, and conduct the investigation, or develop a design solution, by employing the knowledge and skills gained in both previous and current studies.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Define a complex technical problem, experimental investigation or design objective and propose a feasible plan of work to research and/or develop an appropriate solution within the constraints of time and resources available.
2. Apply project management skills including time planning, working to deadlines and producing deliverables.
3. Demonstrate creativity, innovation and technical competence by implementing the project proposal, delivering the problem solving, experimental investigation or design work specified in the plan, and reach substantiated conclusions derived from the work undertaken.
4. Manage technical uncertainty, analyse scenarios and identify realistic options.
5. Select and critically evaluate technical literature and other sources of information.
6. Communicate effectively both the results of their own work and other complex information, with specialist and non-specialist audiences, selecting and evaluating the methods used.
7. Reflect on progress and the extent of independent self-learning and development, through undertaking a substantial technical project.

Private study
In addition to the supporting lectures, students will have meetings with an academic (staff) supervisor. It is expected that there will be an opportunity for students to meet their supervisor an average of once per fortnight for the duration of the project (term weeks). However, the precise format and frequency of these meetings will be arranged between the supervisor and the student.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
