Syllabus

The module will explore a range of approaches to the study of language which can broadly be described as 'critical'. In particular, it will focus on two 'movements': Critical Linguistics (CL), which emerged in the late 1970s, mainly in the UK and Australia; and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), its intellectual successor. In seminars and in their reading, students will be introduced to the central concerns of researchers working in the field, such as the dialectal relationship between language and the social; the construction and maintenance of power relations through language; the role played by language in structuring human experience and world-view; language and social change (neo-liberalism, globalisation, marketisation, informalisation). The module also allows students to develop their own analytical skills, by applying critical methodologies to texts they encounter in their daily lives.
