Module summary
This module is for students who already have a good grade at AS/CEFR B1 or equivalent and wish to take their German to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers. The module includes an unassessed mini-research project on a class topic to facilitate team work and hone presentation skills in the target language. Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, presentation skills, reporting skills and writing a report.Objectives
To consolidate knowledge of the German language at upper intermediate/AS/CEFR B1 level and develop skills and competence up to A2/CEFR B1/B2. On completion of the module, students should be able to exchange on familiar and unfamiliar topics both orally and in writing, understand longer, more complex reading and listening material and demonstrate knowledge of key aspects of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Communicate in the target language in a range of social and professional contexts
- Understand and use appropriately and accurately upper intermediate grammar including the use of past tenses, the future tense, the subjunctive for the conditional mode and reported speech, the passive, relative clauses, prepositions and attributive adjective endings.
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Demonstrate proficiency in reading through accurately extracting key information from written sources
- Produce longer pieces of writing in the target language with an appropriate degree of accuracy and fluency
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of German and English

- Current affairs: covering and summarising topical issues e.g. of local, national and international relevance
- Germany-related facts and statistics
- Tourism and the environmental impact
- Stereotypes, general and specific
- German through art: film, poem, song, cartoon and pictures
