Successful completion of Year 2 of BSc Food Science, and (Industrial) or (International) or BSc Food Science and Nutrition, and (Industrial) or (International)
BSc Nutrition, and (Industrial) or (International)
other suitable University programme.

This module is not approved as a discovery module


On completion of this module, students will have been trained in the fundamental scientific principles required to undertake research in food science or nutrition.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Identify and critically review relevant scientific literature and articulate a researchable question.
2. Plan and design an appropriate investigation.
3. Competently conduct scientific research.
4. Present results in a clear and concise manner, using statistical methods as appropriate.
5. Discuss the relevance and significance of the results and draw appropriate conclusions.
6. Produce a report of the research in a specified length and format.
7. Deliver a poster presentation of the research and respond to questions.

Skills outcomes
Library skills for searching and retrieval of specific information; communication skills; technical and scientific writing skills; interpretation and assessment of data and published research work.


Students will be offered a choice of research area relevant to the research activity and interests of the School, and in some cases suggested by industrial companies. The approach will involve a topic literature review to be incorporated within a research protocol, followed by an original piece of experimental or analytical work based within the research facilities of the School. Data produced will be subject to statistical analysis, and will be written up and presented in the form of a conference-style poster and dissertation.

Private study

Literature review and write up, protocol preparation, data handling and statistical analyses, poster preparation and dissertation write up will be undertaken as private study, incorporating independent learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback will be provided during tutorials with supervisor and in the laboratory, but may also come from other laboratory personnel including laboratory technicians, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Protocol preparation will be discussed within tutorials with supervisor and poster preparation will also receive feedback from the supervisor before submission. Poster presentations are peer-assessed.
