Module summary

Students will undertake a project with an organisation outside or inside the University. The aims of the project will be agreed at the outset and students will work towards meeting the agreed aims and delivering the expected results. Students will generally gain greater self-awareness and confidence in their ability to work with others, to take individual responsibility for planning and management of their work and to appreciate how their knowledge and skills in geography can be transferred and applied in diverse areas of employment.

Objectives

The objectives of the module are to:
1. let students work in collaboration with an organisation (usually) outside the University on a theme, investigation or project relevant to the needs of the organisation and to academic study for a degree in Geography;
2. let students design, negotiate, record and manage their work in cooperation with an academic supervisor and a member of staff from the outside organisation;
3. give students an opportunity to focus on tackling a problem, or group of problems, which are of real concern to the outside organisation and which can be solved to a greater or lesser degree by a student who applies his or her energy, knowledge and skills in a concerted, systematic and managed way to effect a solution in the time and with the resources available.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have applied their knowledge and skills in geography to achieving some goal, solving a problem or investigating an issue of concern to an organisation or group from outside the University. They will have shown that they can achieve what they set out to do.

This will involve negotiating, planning, managing their work, reflecting on its merits and shortcomings, assessing results and drawing conclusions. They will write reports, keep a journal or reflective logbook and produce a poster on their work.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have:
(i) gained experience of working in an organisation;
(ii) developed a range of generic skills and specialist skills;
(iii) demonstrated an ability to manage their time, resources and project;
(iv) improved their ability to judge what is necessary and what is unnecessary for a given project by applying critical assessment of the work that they are doing.
