Students should have completed the PGCert year of the programme before attempting this module, or be able to evidence equivalent prior learning through other educational programmes or work experience.

Module summary

This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop web-based mapping applications using popular and industry-standard internet technologies. This module covers both client-side mapping libraries including Google Maps and Leaflet, alongside server-side technologies such as PHP and Database Management Systems. For the final assessment students have the opportunity to showcase their skills by developing an application of their choice.

Objectives

This module seeks to:

- Provide students with an in-depth understanding of a range of internet technologies for creating web-based mapping applications
- Develop skills in both client-side and server-side technologies, specifically; HTML, CSS, Javascript and Database management systems
- Provide students with an overview of the software development process
- Develop an awareness of security issues when creating web-based applications.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a range of technologies used for web-based data storage, manipulation, visualisation and analysis
2. Build a complete web-based GIS application based on a popular set of software components
3. Demonstrate a set of transferable skills relating to web development and database management
4. Demonstrate an awareness of web server management and security issues.

6. Databases and database management systems
7. Web mapping with Leaflet

Private study

Private study and online learning includes directed and independent wider reading, independent practical work and researching/undertaking module assessments and related tasks.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be provided via discussion boards where students are encouraged to post questions, comments, practical outputs etc. Note that the outputs requested here will differ from those required as part of the summative portfolio.
The module leader will also provide support via email and Skype/Collaborate Ultra during the learning stages, in advance of assessment.
